Technique to determine total microbial numbers

Research Problem

My research domain is microbiology. I want to determine total microbial numbers. Should I use standard plate count method or spiral plate counter?

Standard plate count method is used to determine the number of viable colony forming units in a food. Advantage of using this method is, it is easy to perform.

Jeff, I would suggest you to use spiral plate counter method. This approach has several advantages over other methods. 1. Fewer materials are used 2. Easy to perform 3. 3-4X more samples can be run per hour 4. Spiral plating is an AOAC method

I agree with Vipin. It is advisable to use spiral plate counter. Standard plate count method has more disadvantages than advantages. Although it is an AOAC method, it is not so efficient when compared to that of spiral plate counter.
