Magnetic separation technique is based on reversibly binding DNA to magnetic particles.
Whereas silicon-based technology is used in present kits where the DNA absorbs silica membrane.

In magnetic separation technique, the beads from the bound DNA are separated from cellular components,
washed and the purified DNA will be eluted by using ethanol extraction.
This approach is automated but is costly when compared to other techniques.

I will explain only about silicon-based technology as Virat has already explained the magnetic separation method.
In silicon-based technique, DNA in the presence of salts absorbs to the silica membrane.
Here, the cellular components will be washed and DNA is eluted in low salt.
This approach can be used in the spin column and is cost-effective in comparison to other methods.
