For the first time I came across cloning vectors. I wanted to know the characteristics and types of cloning vectors. Could someone explain the same?

Cloning vectors include apt cloning site and choosable markers. Additionally, sometimes they include the origin of replication and restriction sites.  Some of the features of the cloning vector are: the cloning vector shouldn’t be too large, should not hamper replication process,  and must include multiple sites for cloning.

The most important feature of the cloning vector is that it should contain a selectable marker. Some of the common types of cloning vector are cosmid, yeast artificial chromosome, plasmid, human artificial chromosome,  and bacterial artificial chromosome.

The plasmid cloning vector is of the size 4361 bp and has a cloning limit of 0.1-10kb. Here the resistant gene is tetracycline resistant. Yeast artificial chromosome cloning vector is of the size 11400bp and is isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Bacterial artificial chromosome is a modification of plasmid cloning vector. It is of the size 11827bp and is artificially synthesized. Cosmid too have similar characteristics as plasmid and is 30-50 kb of size.
