Infrared sensors are governed by three laws. Planck’s radiation law, Stefan Boltzmann law and Wein's displacement law.  The Planck's law states that objects at temperature T which is not equal to zero emit radiation.  According to Stefan Boltzmann law, the total energy emitted by a black blackbody at all wavelengths is related to absolute temperature.  And as per Wien’s displacement law, the objects at different temperature emits with the peak at different wavelengths.

Infrared sensors can be passive or active and are divided into two types. Thermal infrared sensors and quantum infrared sensors.  Thermal infrared sensors use infrared energy as heat. On the other hand quantum, infrared sensors offer high detection performance.

infrared sensors are of two types. Thermal and quantum infrared sensors.  Thermal sensors do not require cooling whereas quantum sensors are required to be cooled to achieve precise measurement.  Thermal sensor have slow response and quantum sensors have high response speed.
