Gerontoplast plastids are very simple. These plastids are developed from the degradation of chloroplasts(occurs when plants die).     In the process, chlorophyll will be broken down into chloroplasts leaving the carotenoid pigments behind. This results in the gerontoplast plastids.

Chromoplasts are colorful plastids. This type of plastid is responsible for carotenoid pigment storage and production.     Carotenoids produce yellow, red, and orange pigments. The chromoplast will be primarily located in ripened fruit, flowers, and leaves of angiosperms.     This plastid will be responsible for coloration of tissue in plants that attracts pollinators.

plastids in plants are not limited to chloroplast, chromoplast and gerontoplast. It also includes leucoplasts as well.     This type of plastids lack color and are used to store nutrients. Typically found in tissues,     leucoplasts can be divided into amyloplasts, elaioplasts, etioplasts and proteinoplasts.
