Using a flow cytometer machine, cells or other particles suspended in a liquid stream can be passed via  a laser light beam in single file fashion. This will result in the interaction of the cell with the light and  will be measured by an electronic detection apparatus such as a light scatter and fluorescence intensity.  If a fluorochrome or fluorescent label is stoichiometrically bound to a cellular component,  the fluorescence intensity will represent the amount of a particular cell component.

Flow cytometry enables simultaneous multiparametric analysis of chemical and physical characteristics of up to thousands of particles.  This makes it a quantitative and rapid method for evaluation and purification of cells in suspension.  Using flow cytometry we can also affect the phenotype and even sort live cells.

The flow cytometer consists of three core components such as fluidics, optics, and electronics. The fluidics system will include a flow cell.  The flow cell needs sheath fluid to carry and align the cells so that they pass via a narrow channel and  into the laser intercept. The optics system contains various light detectors, filters, and the light source.  This is where the cells are passed through at least one laser beam.
