Hi Roopa. In a cross-sectional study, data is collected as a whole. These data are used to examine the relation between variables of interest. Whereas longitudinal study, is an observational study, where the data is gathered from the same sample over an extended period of time.

Cross-sectional study does not provide a definitive relationship between cause and effect relation. This is because the cross-sectional study provides a snapshot of a single moment and doesn’t consider what has happened before that moment. The benefit of conducting a longitudinal study is that you can make changes, observations and also detect changes in the characteristics of the participants.

Cross-sectional study, as well as a longitudinal study, are observational studies. The benefit of using cross-sectional study is that it lets researchers compare different variables at the same time whereas longitudinal research enables you to detect developments in the characteristics of the intended population (both the group and the individual level).
