Determination of hybridization includes 5 simple steps. 1. Writing the lewis structure 2. Calculating the number of sigma bonds 3. Calculating the number of lone pairs 4. Calculating steric number 5. Assigning hybridization and shape of the model

The number of sigma bonds formed by an atom is equal to the number of other atoms it is directly linked to. Whereas, the number of lone pairs is given by v-b-c/2 where ‘v’ is the number of valence electrons in the concerned atom.  ‘b’ is no.of bonds and ‘c’ the charge of an atom. Steric number if the sum of sigma and lone pairs.

You have to first write a lewis structure to acquire a rough idea about the structure of the molecule. This is followed by calculating the sigma bonds, lone pairs, steric number. Based on the steric number you can determine the type of hybridization. For example, if the steric number is 2 hybridization type is sp and structure is linear.  If the steric number is 3, then hybridization is sp2 and structure is trigonal planar.
