The theory of atomic emission spectroscopy involves inspection of the wavelengths of photons that are discharged by atoms  as well as molecules as they transit from a higher energy state to a lower energy state.  Here a characteristic set of wavelengths will be emitted by each substance depending on the electronic structure.

Working of atomic absorption spectroscopy is quite simple. When a ground state atom collides with light of an apt wavelength,  the atom will absorb the light and gets excited. The aim here is to measure the quantity of light absorbed at resonant wavelength  when it passes through a atom cluster. The increase in the amount of light absorption will be proportional to the increase in the quantity of atoms.  The quantity of analyte material will be calculated by measuring absorbed light quantity.  The atom cloud required for measuring atomic absorption will be generated by exposing the sample to thermal energy and the flame.  The majority of atoms will stay in the ground state when exposed to appropriate flame conditions and can absorb  light emitted from the source lamp at a particular wavelength.
