I had used MATLAB for image processing. It works absolutely fine. It has many tools that support image processing process.   This software is really good and is reliable. I don’t know much about opencv. But I still think MATLAB is better over any tool.

MATLAB is a good software and there is no doubt about that. However, when it comes to image processing, opencv is the clear winner. The main reason the its speed. MATLAB is built on Java, and in return Java is built upon C. So when you use MATLAB program, your system will be busy trying to interpret the MATLAB code.  On the other hand, opencv functions are written in C/C++. Hence your system won’t take much time in interpreting the codes which in return processes many images.

Opencv is a better tool than MATLAB in case of image processing. Opencv is quite fast, doesn’t use too much of computer resources,  highly portable and is easy to operate which is not in the case of the MATLAB. It would be better if you go with opencv as your friend suggested.
