X-rays can be used to detect cancer. First of all x-ray machine sends controlled beam of radiation.  The tissues in the body will either absorb or block the radiation. Tissues like bones block radiation,  but tissues such as fat or muscle block less radiation. When the beam passes through the body,  the beam hits a special detector. Tissues that block radiation will be displayed as white areas on a black background.  Soft tissues that block less radiation will be displayed in shades of gray. Organs such as the lungs look black.  Since tumors are denser than the tissue they will be displayed as lighter shades of grey.

although x-rays are used to detect cancer, contrast studies offer information that standard which x-rays does not provide.   In a contrast study the contrast material that highlights, outlines, or fills in parts of the body. Hence they provide clear results than that of an x-ray.
